Cavities

Teeth, they are with us hopefully till the end. We grow them after we are born as to not tourture our mom with breast feeding. Then when our head gets too big, we get rid of the small ones and grow another set that will last us supposedly the rest of our lives. However, somewhere along the evolutionary ladder, we developed the ability to have cavities. Is this a defect in evolution? Are we outliving out teeth's experation date? Why don't we grow a backup set?
